About Our Assembly

Green Gospel Assembly Church was founded on May 15, 1946. The first prayer meetings were held at 1741 Betz Drive in Akron, Ohio, in Brother George W. White’s living room prayer meeting with seven people. It was started in answer to and as a result of prayer and revelation from God. We rented a church building at 25 Betz Drive for $25 a month and started having regular church services on June 16, 1946. We moved from 25 Betz Drive to 60 North Arlington Street in Akron, Ohio and began having services on August 31, 1947.

Shortly following the purchase of the 60 North Arlington property, Brother White attended a meeting of “The School of the Prophets” in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Spirit of God so completely saturated him during that service and so thoroughly convinced him of the Order that was working through the fellowship that he came back to Akron a changed person. It was upon Brother White’s return from this meeting that his car broke down 35 miles from Akron. Brother Charles Herman Beougher went to pick him up and as they rode along, Brother White began to tell what he had found. The Spirit was so strong that Brother Beougher received the confirmation of being added to the Body of Christ right there while traveling down the highway.

On October 30 and 31, 1951, the first two-day meeting was held in our assembly. During this meeting, our church was confirmed in the Body of Christ; Sister Agnes Lewis received and interpreted a message in tongues from the Lord. This message is as follows:

Hear! Hear! Hear! I set before thee an open door. It shall not be shut. Thou shalt walk uprightly before me. For yea! I shall hold it open with my foot. I shall wedge it. Who shall shut it? Thou hast the words of life in thy midst for this day mine anointed has spoken unto thee. Yea! Yesterday mine eye was upon thee. My ear was not stopped to thy cry, but my anointing has touched the lips. Yea! My hand was upon My hand, which I have sent unto Akron.

Behold me when thou dost call: I will hear thee. If thou fear, thou shalt not faint. Lo, I shall feed thee. Yea, I shall water thee. And if thou listen to the words I have spoken unto thee, no power that shall rise against thee shall prevail. For I, the Lord, have shone upon thee; for I will care for thee. My word which I have sent unto thee, hear! For I, the Lord, have called thee.

Look! Look! Look! And behold me for I speak! Yea! I speak unto thee. This people which I have taken out, I have called. If thou wouldst, My Word abide in thee; then I shall choose thee as mine own, and thou shalt be in the whelms of the Spirit.

Yea! The Word will abide in thee, and thou shalt have life. Yea! Life eternal!

On January 1, 1955, we moved into the church building at 1159 Fourth Avenue. A two-day ministers’ meeting was held in our new building on August 16 and 17, 1955. This building would be our home for the next eight years until we bought the building at 799 South Arlington Street, in Akron. We started remodeling on November 16, 1963 and had our first service on Friday, November 29, 1963.

On April 9, 1975, we secured approval to purchase ten acres of land at 2535 Wise Road in Green Township, which is now the City of Green, to build a new church building. The first service held was a Bicentennial service on Sunday, July 4, 1976 among the boards and shavings and cement floor as the building was not yet complete. We wanted to celebrate our National Bicentennial by having services in our new building. We moved into the completed building and held a Saturday evening service, October 16, 1976. A dedication service was held on April 12, 1977.

In January 1981, Brother George W. White passed away of a heart attack at his home in Akron. The funeral was conducted at the Gospel Assembly Church by Brothers Fred Young, Bob James, Asa Gillespie and Jack Ross. The founder of the Akron work did not live to see the fulfillment of his dream of a restored church, but his work lives on. Including Brother White, the following pastors have served the Lord and the Green Gospel Assembly Church faithfully in the gospel of Jesus Christ:

  • George W. White  (May 1946 – November 1979)
  • C. Fred Young  (November 1980 – May 1984)
  • Richard Fitzsimmons  (May 1984 – August 1988)
  • Herbert C. McCarty  (August 1988 – May 1990)
  • Richard K. Moore  (June 1990 – Present)

It is with great appreciation in our hearts that we reflect upon all the ways that God has led our church through the years. We have been the benefactors of His great love, grace and mercy and look forward with hope and expectation of the many wondrous and marvelous works that the Lord has in store for those who love His appearing. We would be honored for you to attend our worship services and share in our hope of the future of God’s great work; click here for more information about visiting our church.
